Why Independent Media?
For true democracy to work, people need easy access to independent, diverse sources of news and information.
But the last two decades have seen unprecedented corporate media consolidation. The U.S. media was already fairly homogeneous in the early 1980s: some fifty media conglomerates dominated all media outlets, including television, radio, newspapers, magazines, music, publishing and film. In the year 2000, just six corporations dominated the U.S. media.
In addition, corporate media outlets in the U.S. are legally responsible to their shareholders to maximize profits.
And U.S. “public” media outlets accept funding from major corporations, as well as from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which has attempted in the past to exert political and editorial influence on public news producers.

The Real News Network is a television news and documentary network focused on providing independent and uncompromising journalism.
Our staff, in collaboration with courageous journalists around the globe, will investigate, report and debate stories on the critical issues of our times.
We are viewer supported and do not accept advertising, government or corporate funding.
We won’t blindly follow wire services or official press releases that attempt to set the news agenda. We will cover the big stories of the day, but we will broaden the definition of what’s important.
The Real News will investigate, report and debate stories that help us understand the critical issues of our time.
The movements for the rights of working people, women, children, immigrants, indigenous people, for freedom of religion and conscience, for moral and spiritual values and for peace and against racism are news. The health of our planet will be a story, day after day.

C-SPAN is a private, non-profit company, created in 1979 by the cable television industry as a public service. Our mission is to provide public access to the political process. C-SPAN receives no government funding; operations are funded by fees paid by cable and satellite affiliates who carry C-SPAN programming.

We made Truthout work for years without talking “About Us.” How did we do that? Well, it was never supposed to be about us. It was always about the issues that concern Truthout’s readers. We simply focus on getting the news out there, and putting everything we have on display every single day.
If I can point to one thing that defines Truthout – that makes us unique – it’s that we have accepted these readers as our sole supporters. And while that interdependency may occasionally be a bit stormy, it guarantees that whatever issues arise will be worked out between our organization and the community that we serve. These are quality Internet-only publications that report on and examine geopolitical, political, economic and business issues. We look at these issues from an Asian perspective; this distinguishes us from the mainstream English-language media, whose reporting on Asian matters is generally by Westerners, for Westerners.
We are served by more than 50 correspondents and contributors in 25 Asian countries, the US, and Europe. Additional content is provided by news services and renowned think tank and investment analysts and academics.
Asia Times Online was founded at the beginning of 1999 and is incorporated and duly registered in Hong Kong. It derives its revenues from advertising, the resale of original content to other publications and news services, and subscriptions to atimes.net.
